Hiking Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the 2nd highest mountain in Africa which boasts mountain peaks like Batian, standing a high of 5,199m, Nelion standing a high of 5,188m and Lenana standing a high of 4,985m. Mount Kenya is located in Central province which is south of the equator and is about a 6 hour drive from Kenya's capital city, Nairobi.

Routes to use when climbing Mount Kenya include the Sirimon route which is the most popular Climbing route.It has an easy and steady ascent as compared to the others and it also gives one a beautiful approach to the peaks of Mount Kenya. It usually takes a minimum of 2 days to get to the peaks when using this route.
Burguret route is mostly favored by those who want to avoid crowds and public.Its less used and is more challenging as compared to Sirimon route. Its usually combined with Sirimon and Chogoria routes during descent.
The Chogoria route is an adventurous route commonly used during descent and hikers get to enjoy amazing views of waterfalls that grace Mount Kenya on their descent.
Naro-Moru route is the most popular descent route for its the easiest and fastest route to use when climbing down.

When climbing Mount Kenya Hikers may require the following; A guide, cook, porter,a tent and a sleeping bag. Other requirements can  be obtained from a travel guide which you can get from the Kenya wildlife service guides.

To keep safe, one should know that Mount Kenya (and Kenya generally) is a very cold place between the months of March to August and its advisable to bring with you warm clothing, warm boots, warm gloves and warm headgear to ensure you don't catch a cold.

Before or after hiking Mount Kenya, one can get some rest in any of the surrounding beautiful Hotels.. Serena Mountain Lodge is another exhilarating resting place which floats a high of 2,195 m above sea level on the flanks of Mount Kenya.It is also about a 3 hours drive from Nairobi and about 42 km from Nyeri town.
